October
1999 saw myself and a certain Mr. Karl hiking through the Himalayas on
a trip with a trekking company called World Expeditions. It was to be and
did become more than a fantastic experience. We climbed to a maximum of
5,500 meters above sea level (Kala Pattar) and covered many miles during
the trip. We also met some fantastic people along the way, especially the
Nepalese who made us feel very welcome in their country and very ashamed
at letting the porters carry most of our gear while wearing flip-flops.
The
photographs in this part of my album do not do fair justice to such
amazing scenery but do give some idea of the beauty of the Himalaya. This
yak for example was far sexier in real life as Karl I know will tell you.
There just wasn't enough room in those tents!
The
whole trip was made all the more enjoyable by our trusted trek leader,
Rauf, who made us laugh a lot and didn't believe us when we said we'd seen
a 'bloody chinchilla' in one of the log cabins. With 15 odd years trekking
experience behind him, Rauf knew what he was talking about when he told us
that we could head out into the snow after two days of blizzard, despite
what the Kiwis in our group thought.
Still,
the rescue by a Russian helicopter did make the trip more exciting and
gave us all a story to tell on our return - how we were stranded for
days in a remote area with rapidly diminishing food supplies and
little to keep us warm etc. Well you have to exaggerate a little don't
you.
Anyway,
enough of the waffle - just check out these shots and I know you'll just
want to head off to Nepal for your next holiday...
