After a long train-ride from Thailand we ended up in Penang, which at
first glance looked industrialised and grotty. But moving in Georgetown
things are a little more pleasing on the eye with the colonial buildings
and the two-part funicular railway.
A
long and winding road took us to the amazing Cameron Highlands where we
spent a couple of knackering days hiking around. There was a scary moment
when on trekking up to the tea plantation we got caught in a tropical
storm and a tree fell out into the road about 3 feet in front of us.
There
was no other way out but back along the hilly, windy road heading down to
Kuala Lumpur, the big city. Although I wasn't exactly looking forward to
my visit (noise and pollution) and was intending for it to be a jumping
off point, it was quite an experience and the KL tower was even more
amazing in real life. The only problem was that it closes to the public at
4.00pm and we missed a visit so we went up the telecom tower instead.
Even
more fantastic than any of Peninsula Malaysia that I had seen (although I
hadn't really done it justice) was East Malaysia, Borneo (see Borneo page
for details).
