Sicily
- October 2006
In search of some autumn sunshine we headed to Sicily for a few days and
enjoyed sunshine and temperatures around 25 degrees, despite it being the
rainy season. The main objective of this holiday was relaxation before
returning home to face the British winter, so we did less of the exploring
and a bit more chilling.
That said, we did hire a car for a day and set off in search of some of
the real Sicily. This we found in the very quaint and picturesque
Castelbuono, Enna and Temini Imerese. Although the castle was closed for a
national holiday (Saint's day or soul's day or similar), we
still enjoyed watching the locals go about their business and sampling
cakes and coffee at a contemporary cafe.
We also thought that a visit to Sicily would be incomplete without a trip
to see Mount Etna, that largest active volcano in Europe. In fact due to a
very recent eruption, the volcano was still smoking during our visit. I
ventured to the top of the volcano via cable-car and 4WD bus to see the
lava-flow. I also paid to hike up to the crater, but forgot to do that bit
- bugger! I did however, manage to melt the sole of one of my shoes by
going too close to the lava-flow! After relaying my story to one of the
older gentlemen on the trip, I was given the title 'hot-foot'!
