Crete

Crete, October 2004

A very last minute holiday booking saw us in the Greek island of Crete just a few days later in a place called Gouves, north-east of the island. We were told that the resort was quite quiet, which was fine by us. However, being late in the season the village was practically deserted, which was quite spooky. The hotel though was quite lively as were other nearby resorts.
The first two days of holiday were hot and sunny as hoped for, but things went a little pear-shaped after that with mostly overcast days and some rain. This, however was particularly good weather for hiking Samaria Gorge. It was a very pleasant day trip and the walking, though strenuous, was much easier for not having the sun beating down on us! Also through pure luck we managed to avoid much of the rain by being in the right part of the island at the right time. At one stage we were enjoying sunbathing on Preveli beach whilst our resort in Gouves had a day of torrential rain!
Through the use of buses, coach trip and a hire car we saw quite a lot in one week; Iraklion, Rethymno, Preveli, Myrtos and some more remote areas such as Ano Viannos. Also got to swim in both the Cretan and Libyan seas. It is such a beautiful island with quite a diverse landscape. There are the dramatic white mountains in the west and countless gorges and canyons, and of course the sandy and not so sandy beaches.
My photographs probably don't do Crete justice but do check them out anyway...
